Despite its pride of place among Venice's symbols, the gondola requires prohibitively expensive maintenance. As such, the privately-owned vessels are facing extinction - losing ground to more convenient and much cheaper means of transport such as the [I 002 / motor boat]. Even tourists find the gondola an expensive treat. One ride is considered quite sufficient as an experience.
